Degree Requirements

All students admitted to the MSEng should become familiar with academic requirements and processes associated with graduate studies in the Bagley College of Engineering and Mississippi State University as noted in the MSU Graduate Catalog in the General Requirements of the Graduate School and General Master’s Degree Requirements sections.

Concentration

The Computational Engineering concentration is a 30-hour thesis or 33-hour non-thesis program administered through the Bagley College of Engineering Dean’s Office. The Master of Science in Engineering with a concentration in Computational Engineering will complete courses that provide engineers with a foundation to create tools for computational analysis and design, and with a strong domain knowledge for application of these tools to complex engineering problems. Such programs of study come with curricula covering a wide range of subjects, preparing the students to become scientists and engineers with broad backgrounds and viewpoints. These scientists and engineers are then expected to understand and apply these basic approaches to solving analytical problems and also using appropriate computational tools required to arrive at solutions.

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the Computational Engineering program, the program of study must demonstrate the student has achieved a working knowledge of:

A Computational Engineering application area
High-performance computing
Numerical mathematics

Various courses, internal and external to engineering, can be used to fulfill this requirement, but must be approved by the CME graduate coordinator and the student’s graduate committee.

The Engineering concentration is a 30-hour thesis/non-thesis program administered through the Bagley College of Engineering Dean’s Office. Programs of study and research leading to the Master of Science in Engineering with a concentration in Engineering will be custom-tailored for individualized student learning and will allow students to draw upon courses from across the college and university.

Accelerated Program

Qualified undergraduates in MSU’s engineering departments may apply to the Accelerated Program and earn up to 9 graduate credit hours during their senior year.

To be eligible, students must:

Be enrolled in an MSU engineering undergraduate program
Have completed at least 60 credit hours
Maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher

Admissions – Online M.S. in Engineering

Students seeking full admission into the Master of Science in Engineering (MSEng) should apply as Classified students. Non-degree-seeking students who wish to take online courses without pursuing a degree should apply as Unclassified students.

Applications are reviewed twice a year. Submit your application by:

June 1 for Fall Semester
November 1 for Spring Semester
May 1 for Summer Semester

Applications are accepted year-round. You can apply at any time and begin your studies in the Fall or Spring semester.

Attention International Students

Applicants whose native language is not English must submit the results of either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. Prospective students should contact ETS (TOEFL) or IELTS for testing information. The Graduate School maintains a list of countries exempt from English language requirements. Please consult the Graduate Catalog for specific English Language test score requirements.

8.0-8.5	69-78	6.0-6.4	Eligible for admission for Fall, Spring, or Summer and a graduate assistantship.	Scores indicate a need for assistance in English writing, research, and editing skills. Applicant must enroll in EAP 5323 Academic Research and Writing. Student may enroll in up to 6 credit hours in his/her graduate program.
7.0-7.5	61-68	5.5-5.9	Eligible for admission for the Fall & Spring terms only. Not eligible for a graduate assistantship until ESL requirements are met.	Applicant is required to enroll in ESL 5120, a 9-hour intensive English course (graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis). The student must complete this course prior to registering for courses in his/her graduate program. The student must then enroll in EAP 5323.
6.0-6.5	54-60	4.6-5.4	Eligible for admission for the Fall term only. Not eligible for a graduate assistantship until ESL requirements are met.	Applicant is required to enroll in ESL 5110, an intensive English course (graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis). The student cannot enroll in courses in his/her program until ESL 5110 and ESL 5120 have been successfully completed. The student must then complete ESL 5120 before proceeding to enroll in EAP 5323.
5.5 and below	53 and below	4.5 and below	Not eligible for admission to the Graduate School.	Applicant can enroll in the English Language Institute on a non-credit basis after which he/she can retake the English-language test in preparation for submitting another application to graduate study at MSU.

Academic Advising

After gaining admission to the university, you must contact your advisor to determine the courses that are most appropriate for you to take. Approximately two months prior to the upcoming semester, your advisor will send an email to your MSU email account, making course recommendations based on your program of study.
